Mental Health Peer Specialist
A peer is a person with lived experience of recovery from mental illness or addiction.
By combining this experience with skills learned in formal training, peer specialists (e.g., certified peer specialist, peer support specialist) deliver services to support long-term recovery.
The goal is to EMPOWER you with confidence, esteem, knowledge, and coping skills to manage or overcome your current stressors. You set the pace and are the main decision-maker on how you want to achieve your goals. Therapists provide good listening skills, coupled with encouraging and insightful feedback, aiding you to focus and meet your goals so that you are more able to tackle stressors on your own.
EXPECT to gain awareness on how your stressors are affecting you and a more optimistic view that improvements can be made in coping, managing, and conquering stressors. PERCEPTIONS have a large influence on our attitudes which then direct our moods and behaviors. Increasing awareness of one’s own perceptions and how they help or hinder daily life is a very significant coping skill.
At times, our experiences can cause problems in relationships, employment, or just uncomfortable feelings in general. Such experiences can be from trauma, abuse, criticism, grief, loss, or even from self-perceptions of inadequacy. EMOTIONAL HEALING can be achieved by expressing those experiences and feelings in an empathetic atmosphere to professionals who understand the course of emotional healing.
Professional counselors do not treat medically, but they can provide awareness of some of the various health practices and treatments available to choose from and teach both behavioral modification techniques and coping skills to decrease symptoms. Many individuals will benefit from a combination of services from healthcare providers, counselors, and other service providers, depending upon the individual’s unique needs and goals.
